On 30 October 1992, a joint Sino-Japanese expedition, led by Jiro Yamada and Losang Dawa, made the first ascent of Namcha Barwa (7,782 m), then the world’s highest unclimbed peak, in the Namcha Barwa Himal, Tibet, via the south ridge. Eleven mountaineers, divided into two rope teams, reached the summit, led by Kazuo Yamamoto for the Japanese team and by Jiabu for the Chinese team.
